Hide God’s Word in Your Heart

I’ve never been one to find memorizing scripture all that important. Besides, I can’t really remember things like that. That is NOT my gift. I even used secretly think of folks that did with a scoffing “they’re such show offs!” (Sorry about that, y’all.)

One day, I was researching curriculum choices for our homeschool. I found Simply Charlotte Mason to be an incredible resource with a lovely (and free) curriculum guide. Part of the guide includes scripture memory work. At first, I scoffed. “Puh! We can skip that part.”

It wasn’t long before God reminded me through a comment from a friend (on a totally different topic!) that we are to hide God’s Word in our hearts. Boom. Message received, Lord. I added Scripture Memory to our homeschool.

As I worked with the kids, I started to remember the verses! We started with the following verses, one at a time: Genesis 1:1, Genesis 1:27, Genesis 1:31, Genesis 2:7. We’re cooking now!

About a month ago, our next “verse” in the pack is Psalm 23. The whole thing. Yeah. I was a little intimidated. I even doubted that I could do it. This isn’t just one verse. This is the big leagues.

I decided to write it out without the verse numbers so it would seem like one LONG verse. Then, we spent 2-3 days on each line and very slowly made our way through it all. You know what happened?

I did it!

I have it memorized! I memorized Psalm 23. The beauty of this all, is that this Psalm and the smeckling of verses from Genesis I have memorized sometimes occupy my mind and other times become prayers.

I want my heart to be FULL of God’s Word.

Some of you are thinking, “big deal” and other’s might be thinking “show off!” Even if you’re with me celebrating this moment, I wonder – do you think you can do it?

You can.

Even if you aren’t a homeschooler, check out this memory system. It’s pretty amazing. There’s even a video. These are the verse packs we use, but you can make your own lists. You can even skip making a list at all. Just pick a verse/selection and get started. When you have it memorized (and you will!), pick a new verse/selection. Keep going.

You too can hide God’s Word in your heart, and it is so very worthwhile to do so.
