The Common Cold

We got hit with this lovely illness last week and are still in the weeds a little bit. Except our weeds are copious quantities of tissues, hand sanitizer, and Clorox wipes! Naturally, this brings up lots of questions. Here are a few:

  1. Am I still infectious?
Yes. With the common cold you are infectious from two days prior to symptoms (fun!) and up to two weeks after symptoms start.
  2. What does the color of my snot mean?
Clear is normal. If you have a lot, maybe allergies.
Yellow is less normal. You probably have an infection going on.
Green is an infection. If it lasts longer than 10 days, go to your doctor.
There are cases with red, brown, and black snot. Those could be blood, pollution, or fungal infection respectively.

  3. Can I drink lemonade instead of water?
Yes. Non-caffeinated and clear fluids are great. Drink lots. Be careful of sugary drinks though.

If the kids come up with any other questions, I’ll be sure to update here.
