Jesus Calms the Storm

In Green

Ducks brought home one of these projects from preschool one day, and even snuggled it to bed. She loved her “Jesus Calms the Storm” bottle. Who wouldn’t?! Well, one day it sprung a leak. I figured out how to make our own, and finally got it all together. The kids decided not to go with the traditional blue water. They wanted green. They are all fixated on green everything. I don’t really know why, but I just roll with it. Why not? lol

How To

  1. Take a small, clear plastic water/juice bottle & clean it up.
  2. Fill the bottle part-way with water. I chose half.
  3. Add in your blue (or green) food coloring and mix until you get the desired color.
(The green I used was from a “neon” pack of food coloring.)
  4. Add canola/vegetable oil to near the top of the bottle.
(I guess you can fill it all the way up, but I thought it was more interesting to have air in the mix.)
  5. Use a hot glue gun to seal the lid closed. I put a small bead around the inside of the cap and quickly screwed the cap snugly on the bottle.
  6. The hot glue doesn’t take long to set. I spent that time reading the “Jesus Calms the Storm” story from their Beginner’s Bible.

This also provided a great lesson on oil vs. water. My oldest was very curious about why this works, and why the oil is always on top. This was a fun and educational little project that took no more than 20 minutes.

Have fun!
